Yarmouth Pier wins Heritage Lottery Fund supportExpand

Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners (YHC) has received initial support* from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for ‘The Pier’s Tale’, an exciting new project to restore Yarmouth Pier. The project will let the Pier ‘tell tales’ of its 140 years of living in Yarmouth, from its construction and the changes all around it to what lies beneath!

The HLF have awarded development funding of £60,000 to help gather the information required to apply for a full grant at a later date. Over the next few months YHC will investigate the extent of the work that needs to be carried out on the structure itself and the opportunities to reuse suitable timber from other coastal projects. This will include an underwater structural survey and gathering information about the local archaeology, environment and social history. The Pier’s Tale project team will work with partners from universities, schools and the local community to develop a wide range of research opportunities, activities and events all helping the Pier to tell its fascinating tale.

Yarmouth Pier is the only wooden pier of its type in the country and has remained in its enviable position extending from the Isle of Wight since construction in 1876. Previous work has included replacing piles that had been damaged by the tough coastal conditions and the attention of creatures such as the now locally famous gribble. The rest of the pier now needs attention and YHC are keen to look at innovative ways to make the project sustainable whilst still protecting this unique piece of the Island’s heritage.

Commenting on the award, Tim Adams, Yarmouth Harbour Master said: “We’re delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has given us this support. Our unique Pier is a popular feature of Yarmouth and it’s great to know that we are a step closer to maintaining it for generations to come.”
