Yarmouth Harbour Entry and Exit

Do's and Don'ts

Sailing is forbidden

Owing to narrow navigable channels, sailing is forbidden unless by prior arrangement.

Speed limit

4 knots over the ground in the River Yar and inner Harbour area, and 6 knots over the ground from the entrance Dolphin at the breakwater to the outer Harbour limits. All efforts to reduce wash must be taken. Note that speed limits will be strictly enforced.

Harbour Entrance

Yarmouth is shared by yachtsmen, fishermen and ferry operators. At times the entrance can become very busy and special vigilance is required when navigating in this area. Visitors are particularly requested to give the Wightlink ferry a wide berth as it enters and leaves the Harbour.

Re-fuelling

IMPORTANT Petrol and diesel are very inflammable. Every effort to reduce the risk of spillage or explosion should be taken.

Do your tanks have good breathers? Do your fuel gauges work correctly?

When refuelling:

  • Switch off engines and generator sets
  • NO smoking
  • NO use of mobile phones or VHF radios
  • Please handle fuel guns with care
  • DO NOT spill fuel into Harbour
  • DO NOT start engines until all filler guns and tank openings are closed

(In the event of fuel spillage, immediately inform the Harbour staff.)

Bilges

DO NOT pump out oily bilges into Harbour or river. Oil spillage is a reportable incident.

Waste

DO NOT throw any rubbish overboard. Facilities for the proper disposal of refuse are available.

Outboard Engines

Kill switches. Please use where fitted.

Swimming

There is No Swimming in the Harbour.
