On the Water....
The Festival Old Gaffers race is on Saturday, and on Sunday
morning the Royal Solent Yacht Club has the
Queen's Jubilee Race.
The
Common to the East, the
beach to the West and, of course, the Pier, are all good vantage points
for these events. The sight of a harbour full of gaff rigged boats, dressed overall, evokes a bygone age
and is in complete contrast to the usual fleet of white fibreglass! The Old Gaffers travel
from all over the country to participate and race at the
Festival. As well as the Gaffers themselves,
there are races for X and Y class yachts - Bermudan rigged but
around 100 years old - and Scow and Optimist
dinghies. |
